Boys Track Team Blurb
October 7, 2016
There’s fast and then there’s super fast–thust like saying there’s track teams and then there’s the Sandburg boys track team. Last year the boys team gave stellar performances by winning both Conference and Sectionals with strong achievements across the board. They qualified eight athletes and a pair of relay teams to the class 3A state meet. At the meet the Torpy twins dominated, both winning individual events. Sean Torpy placed first in the 1,600 meters (4:15.13) and Chris Torpy won the 800 meters (1:50.88). They were also part of the 3,200 meter relay team that set a State meet record with a 2016 national-best time of (7:37.36). This led to their big finish, taking third place as a team and earning Sandburg its first state trophy since 1977.
The boys head track coach, Joseph Nemeth, commented how last season was unquestionably the most successful in the program’s history.
Looking ahead Coach Nemeth notes that current senior Ayo Abiona had a 3rd place State finish in the Long Jump and 7th in the 100 meter dash and junior Dylan Jacobs, was a 1600 meter qualifier for the State meet. Both will be back this year.
That’s why Coach Nemeth said, “The team will be very competitive all year and will once again look for a successful May.”
