Boys Volleyball Blurb
October 7, 2016
Our Carl Sandburg boys volleyball team were very successful in the previous school year. They trained and practiced hard six days a week to reach their “One Goal” which was the motto for their season. Their “One Goal” was to win the State Championship. Unfortunately they didn’t accomplish that goal, yet they were very successful and accomplished many other goals, leaving a permanent mark on the Carl Sandburg boys volleyball program.
The team, coached by Sean Airola, came in 3rd in the state tournament losing to eventual champions Glenbard West. The team was lead by 6’9” hitter Jake Hanes, who was named Daily Southtown Player of the Year. Hanes, who graduated in May with his shorter classmates, went on to fulfill his academic and volleyball career with a full ride to The Ohio State University. Along with Hanes’ accolades, Elasco, Grant Burden, Tajai Ling, and Hanes were placed on the Daily Southtown All Area Team.
However, despite graduating so many talented seniors, Carl Sandburg’s boys volleyball team has many promising players coming back to play this year and will go on to fight towards that “One Goal”–and they will do everything in their spiking, serving, bumping, and setting power to fulfill that mission.
